The Leopard 1 Main Battle Tank carries a maximum armor of 2. Turret armor ranges from 2 inches on the front to 2. The turret mantlet, which furnishes additional armor protection for the turret front, is also 2. The Leopard 1 is capable of sustained road speeds of 40 miles per hour and has a range of miles. The engine is designed so that it can be extracted and replaced in the field within 20 minutes. The tank also carries two 7. The coaxial machine gun, originally intended for estimating range for the main gun, was later replaced by an optical gun sight.

There have been four models of the basic Leopard 1 Main Battle Tank. The first was the Al, fitted with a gun stabilization system, new tracks, and a thermal heat sleeve on the main gun. The Leopard 1A2, the second model, has a stronger cast-steel turret, an upgraded nuclear-biological-chemical protection system, and night vision image intensifier equipment.

The third model, the 1A3, was fitted with new spaced armor and an integral storage bin at the rear of the turret. The new turret armor comprised a series of sloped planes and had a distinctive wedgelike mantlet.

A total of 6, Leopard 1 tanks of all configurations, including armored recovery vehicles, armored engineer vehicles, bridge layers, antiaircraft vehicles, and training vehicles, were built, 3, for West Germany alone. Apart from that, the characteristic feature of this tank is the extraordinary range of vision, and good angle of vertical movement for the cannon, which allows it to conduct fire from behind elevations.

The flaws? Just like in the predecessor,: the armor that cannot protect you even from the fire of light tanks and high susceptibility to module damage.

Apart from that, the tank is perfect as a scout and the squad sniper. Playing with the Leopard 1 requires of the player perfect knowledge of the map and of enemy vehicles - unfortunately, this vehicle is not forbearing. Optional equipment: toolbox, camouflage net, binocular telescope, improved guiding system, improved ventilation.

Skills and perks: sixth sense for the commander, repair for the rest of the crew. Then, brothers in arms or camouflage for the entire crew. The Leopard 1 has no armoring that would, in any way, protect it against the tanks it encounters. The only thing is that shells aimed at the cannon armor may ricochet sporadically. The Leopard 1 has a welded hull and cast turret. Armor of this tank is relatively thin. Germans estimated that contemporary Soviet T tank could penetrate frontal armor of the Leopard 1 at a range of 1 meters. Newer Soviet T tank could penetrate it at a range of over 3 meters. The tank is fitted with NBC protection equipment for the crew. Despite its relatively thin armor, the Leopard 1 packed a formidable punch. This gun is loaded manually. The Leopard or Leopard 1 is a main battle tank designed and produced by Porsche in West Germany that first entered service in Developed in an era when HEAT warheads were thought to make conventional heavy armour of limited value, the Leopard focused on firepower in the form of the German-built version of the British L7 mm gun, and improved cross-country performance that was unmatched by other designs of the era.

The design started as a collaborative project during the s between West Germany and Franceand later joined by Italy[1] but the partnership ended shortly after and the final design was ordered by the Bundeswehrwith full-scale production starting in In total, 6, Leopard tanks have been built, of which 4, were battle tanks and 1, were utility and anti-aircraft variants, not including 80 prototypes and pre-series vehicles.

The Leopard quickly became a standard of European forces, and eventually served as the main battle tank in over a dozen countries worldwide, with West Germany, Italy and the Netherlands being the largest operators until their retirement. Sincethe Leopard 1 has gradually been relegated to secondary roles in most armies. In the German Armythe Leopard 1 was completely phased out in by the Leopard 2while Leopard 1-based vehicles are still widely used in utility roles.

The Leopard 2 has replaced the Leopard 1 in service with many other nations as well, with derived vehicles using the Leopard 1 hull still seeing service. Currently, the largest operators are Greecewith vehicles, Turkeywith vehicles and Brazil with vehicles. Most of these vehicles have been upgraded with various improvements to armour, firepower and sensors to maintain their ability to engage modern threats.

The Leopard project started in November in order to develop a modern tank, the Standard-Panzerto replace the Bundeswehr's American-built M47 and M48 Patton tanks, which, though just delivered to West Germany's recently reconstituted army, were rapidly becoming outdated.

Mobility had priority, while firepower came second; armour was seen as less essential, as it was believed that no real protection against hollow charge weapons was possible anyway. France was very interested in the design as its own AMX 50 project had just failed. Three German Arbeitsgruppe A, B and C and one French design team would be included in a competition, with each team producing two prototypes.

In SeptemberItaly joined the development program. Several prototypes were entered for testing in Among the prototypes were Porsche 's Model from team A, sporting a cast turret, and that of team B Rheinmetallwhose cast turret was somewhat higher. Team C from Borgwarddesigning a very futuristic tank, failed to have a prototype ready in time. Even before these first prototypes were finished, it had in been decided that a second phase with improved designs would be started: Team A had to build 26 phase II prototypes for testing, team B six.

Only two tanks of the required six would actually be constructed by team B. The Porsche Prototype II was eventually selected as the winner of the contest in ; this did not come as a surprise: it had already been decided in to build a pre-series of 50 vehicles based on this design; production of these was started that very year.

This "0-series" was modified with a new cast turret and several hull changes to raise the rear deck to provide more room in the engine compartment and move some of the radiators to the upper sides of the hull. Before mass production of the standard version started, it was also decided to add an optical range-finding system for better long-range gunnery, which required the turret to be somewhat taller, and added "bumps" on either side of the turret to mount the optics for triangulation.

Germany dropped France from the joint program after France repeatedly missed deadlines for its contribution to the program.Credit: Image copyright www. The German war-making capacity was dismantled by the victors following the end of the war in Europe.

The situation remained status quo for much of the Cold War with each side spewing rhetoric and awaiting the other side to make the first fatal move.

West Germany was accepted into NATO in and was then forced with the prospect of developing an all-new combat vehicle to fill the Main Battle Tank role in their inventory.

Leopard 1 Main Battle Tank

The new design would become the first indigenously developed and produced combat tank since the close of World War 2 in Initial interest was split between the West Germans and the French for a common battle tank that would not only control development costs but make logistical sense to both nations and NATO.

The two countries joined forces in For the West Germans, they sought a suitable replacement for their newly-minted American-made M47 and M48 "Patton" tanks.

While this pair served their time well, they ultimately became limited by their technology and 90mm main gun armament. The agreed-upon project name became "Standard-Panzer".

Inthe Standard-Panzer was given a "face" of sorts through a "wish list" of requirements. Primary requirements included use of the excellent British L7 mm main gun, standard NBS Nuclear, Biological, Chemical protection, excellent cross-country performance from its diesel engine and resistance to 20mm ant-tank projectiles.

At this time, the projected tank design took on the name of "Europa-Panzer".

By this time, three German firms were involved in the initial proposals while a single French team joined them. Inthey were both officially joined by the Italians who also sought a next-generation tank solution at cost. Prototypes were constructed and evaluated for and testing soon expanded the design phase more. It was only a Porsche-designed prototype that was successfully evaluated against all other competition. The winning design was formally announced inpaving the way for development and, ultimately, serial production.

Before serial production would begin, however, the original design was revised to include a cast turret, larger engine hold, revised armor protection and an optical rangefinder as standard. Of note at this time was the French having completed their own prototype tank system which they thought rather fitting for their armored corps.

At some point, the Italians also abandoned a joint combat tank project with the Germans as well. With the new German design in place, production ramped up in September of out of the Krauss-Maffei facility of Munich. The tank was designated simply as the "Leopard 1", the name exuding speed in one's mind. Production of this first-run model spanned into July of with first deliveries to the West German Army commencing that same year.

Foreign sales would span from into the early s which resulted in thousands being produced and stocking the inventories of the most modern and some modest armies around the world. For NATO, the arrival of the Leopard 1, coupled with the new British Chieftain, supplied a much-needed one-two punch and armored deterrent against Soviet aggression in Europe.

Additionally, widespread use of a common system led to a natural logistical benefit of like-training, like-ammunition stores and commonality of parts within the NATO sphere. Outwardly, the Leopard 1 followed conventional wisdom in regards to combat tank design of the Cold War. The vehicle was divided internally into three key sections made up of the front hull, the turret bustle and the rear-set engine compartment. There were two long-running tracks set to either hull side, covered along their top and upper side facings by thin armor plates.

Each track side was dominated by six large road wheels with a drive sprocket to the front and a track idler at the rear.Main battle tank of the Federal Republic of Germany.
